Coffee tables in Java serve the familiar purposes of function and style in providing a decorative platform at sitting hand level for refreshments. Traditional Javanese coffee tables tend to be wider and bit lower, with the posts of the four legs slightly protruding above the table surface for added sturdiness of construction. In some tables, these protruding legs on one side extend a foot or more above the table surface, and this feature reveals their original purpose as sewing tables. The posts provided convenience in managing fabrics being sewn by hand. Javanese themselves often give sewing tables a second life as a coffee table, with or without the taller posts surviving the transition. We offer solid teak, hand-crafted traditional Javanese coffee tables. We also offer unique, hand-carved coffee tables from Timor of several designs. Timorese people sit on the floor to dine. What we see as a coffee table, they use as a dining table and devote artistic attention to the carved surface as an expression of their heritage and status for guests at the dinner table.
