Java - The gebyok is a sturdy solid teak wood structure serving as a doorway showpiece in traditional Javanese and Balinese homes. There are distinct types of gebyok reflecting regional cultures, but no two gebyok are alike even within regions. Each is the creation of masterful traditional wood carvers often carrying a unique theme suited to the household.

Madura - We have in stock frames that fit 6 feet wide and 8 feet high doorways.  Our styles vary in in finish and in carving but all carving is "Madurese" style.  That being a particular style that originates on the island of Madura, off the Javanese coast.

Borneo - Traditional homes in Indonesia often use elaborately carved doors to represent tribal heritage, along with family history and values.  These carvings could be used as main entrance doorways, window shutters, or smaller doors into barns or grain storage sheds.  This practical use of these beautiful carvings is evident from the protruding rounded knob at top and bottom to one side, which are always formed from the solid, single piece of wood used.  In our antique pieces these knobs are smoothed from years of use.

Timor - Traditional homes on Timor typically are constructed of thatched grass or palm roofs and walls hung onto a sturdy wooden frame built on low stilts.  Incorporated into the frame are often sturdy and decorative doors representing elements of the Timorese world view closely tying humans with the natural world.  When these homes fall into disuse the frames are recovered and Djawa Traders proudly offers these unique, hand-crafted pieces made of suar or timor redwood.
